Disney-MGM Studios to Drop "MGM" - not a Change in Direction but in Evolution

A recent announcement from Walt Disney has disclosed that its famous movie-oriented theme park will be soon going through a renaming process: from Disney-MGM Studios to Disney's Hollywood Studios.

The move was long anticipated but nevertheless still surprising. In fact Walt Disney has gone through a long legal battle with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer-Inc. over the MGM title – one would have imagined not dropping it just after few years from having won its naming rights!

The new name will come into effect from January. "The name reflects how the park has grown from representing the golden age of movies to a celebration of the new entertainment that today's Hollywood has to offer in music, television, movies and theater," Disney World President Meg Crofton commented when this news was released.

In the mean time, several entertainment changes in the theme park will come along with the implementation of the new name. In fact, the new name has been adopted to reflect the change in positioning of the studio.

"I don't think it's a change in direction, I think it's a natural evolution," stated Michael O'Grattan, Disney World vice president for Disney-MGM Studios. "We have so many new products, like Lights Motors Action! And some of the things we have coming in, like Toy Story Mania."

And in spite of geographical concern Hollywood has been preferred over ABC or Pixar – contrarily to what suggested by many - to be integrated in the new name. Certainly, for the very “essence of the name that Hollywood conjures up for people" as O'Grattan has quite rightly said.
