On the 28th of October, Chinese automotive companies Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile and Pang Da Automobile Trade agreed to purchase Swedish car brand Saab for 100 million euros and 610 million euros in long-term funding. Although the deal has met with the obstacle from GM, the technology licenses holder of Saab, Youngman has not given up acquiring Saab. Questions are still worth discussing about Saab’s naming strategy in China if the company turns Chinese.

Once again, H&R has caught public attention with a new campaign called “Get it right.” This latest approach focuses on consumer needs and pays attention to detailed aspects of individual income tax. Questions like “Is a haircut a job-hunting expense?” and “Last summer, my kid made four figures. Does he have to file a tax return?” are asked in the commercial.

New Year, new life...this must have been the motto of Alcatel Shanghai Bell for 2009. In fact the Alcatel & Lucent merged company has launched its new brand name and logo starting from January 8th 2009: from Alcatel Shanghai Bell to Alcatel Lucent.

Name and logo go back to the companies’ history – by combining two solid equities and evolving them in a rejuvenated brand for the telecom industry in China – but also communicate strongly on the Chinese identity.

Branding is not a recent phenomenon: the practice of using brand names to establish reputation and attract customers has been around for centuries. It is no doubt a great fortune that many of these brand names have survived the passage of time to become classics on the market. Many, whether it be Ford, Coca-Cola, or the many Chinese 老字号 (time-honored brands), has earned consumers’ trust at least partly because of the reputation for excellence and longevity they have established in the up and downs of the changing marketplace.

China Mobile starts to use the brand new logo of its “3G” business. The new slogan “G3, leading the new life of 3G times” is also substituted for the previous one “TD’s development, I support” 

The new logo removes the term “TD-SCDMA” to reduce the technical talking that so often sound obscure and unfriendly to consumers. It tries instead to use a direct way to represent verbally and visually the top-notch but complicated technology.
